mammagrams verses ultrasounds on breast and the cost

I work in a free-standing imaging center, in Northern California. For a screening mammogram, with CAD (Computer Aided Detection) reading & radiologist interpretation, we charge $295. The FDA allows a woman to have a yearly mammogram, without a doctor is referral or order.

For a breast ultrasound, with radiologist interpretation, we charge $250 per breast. So, for both breasts, the charge would be $500. You cannot have a breast ultrasound without a doctor is order.

Prices will vary depending on which state u r in..in fact, the prices can vary quite a bit between facilities in the same area. I work in a free standing imaging center, & we charge about half what the hospital (located in the same town!) charges.

So u know, ultrasound is not used as a cancer screening exam. It is used when the patient (or her doctor) feels a lump or there is an abnormal finding on a mammogram. The ultrasound is a highly directed study, not a screening tool done on asymptomatic patients. This is because ultrasound cannot see microcalcifications, but mammography can. At times, the only sign of breast cancer r microcalcifications. If u only have an ultrasound, this sign will be missed.
